The International Program will be held on the afternoon of Tuesday September 17, 2024 with a reception to follow. NCBJ begins on Wednesday September 18 and runs through September 20. Many TMA members will also attend NCBJ, and we hope you can join us for exciting seminars, panels, and networking.

The Grand Hyatt and the Hyatt Regency currently have rooms available for Tuesday September 17. NCBJ registrants will receive discounted rates for the Hyatt Regency, but register soon to reserve your room - the hotel is expected to sell out.

A note from long time TMA member and Chair of the International Program, the Honorable Mary Jo Heston:

The shortened format of the 2024 NCBJ Annual Meeting gave us the opportunity to run a half day International Program at the Seattle Hyatt, the main conference hotel, on Tuesday September 17, 2024, from 1 – 4 pm with three panels on a variety of topics and involving several well-respected and knowledgeable Canadian and U.S. judges, lawyers, trustees, and financial professionals as panelists. There will also be a reception following the educational program so you can get to know our Canadian neighbors. I can tell you from experience that you will make lifelong friends and valuable professional contacts. We are extremely excited to have TMA, IWIRC and ACB as co-sponsors for this program. As a bonus, the Program’s materials will be practical and highly useful for Canadian and U.S. practitioners and judges alike and will include two charts comparing the Canadian and U.S. bankruptcy and insolvency laws as well as summaries of their recent cases and developments in the respective insolvencies and Canada-U.S. cross border cases.

Below are a just a few highlights that will be discussed by the panelists:

  • How will the SCOTUS Harrington vs. Purdue decision affect the approach to cross border Canada-U.S. insolvency cases?
  • What are the best methods to get a Canadian reverse vesting order or its U.S. cousin, the Texas Two Step, recognized across the border?
  • What are the issues that arise in small business cases under the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act compared to the SBRA?
  • What is the role of a Canadian Monitor and how does it compare to U.S. appointed trustees and examiners?
